Channeling and Mediumship.

by Liz Becker

A medium is a conduit or channel for spirits to communicate through. Typically a medium goes into a trance or very relaxed state. During that time a medium may not be aware of what they're saying. The medium's voice may change or it might not. During a trance session or seance, spirits use their host's human body to communicate to other people in the group.

A seance is an event where a spirit medium makes contact with people who have died and are 'on the other side'. Typically these spirits will speak through a medium who is in a trance. The spirit medium will give messages to their loved ones who are still living. The living relative or relatives at the seance are able to communicate with their deceased loved one. Questions, answers, information, and comments are exchanged.

There are different types of seances. At some seances, spirits will give tangible gifts to people in the group. These are called 'apports'. These gifts can be jewelry, crystals, keys or anything small in size and they often have significance to the receiver. At a trumpet seance, spirits will speak to individuals in the group through a trumpet that mysteriously travels around the room on it's own power. At other seances you may see very heavy objects such as pianos levitate off the ground. Still other mediums may be able to change the appearance of their face to replicate the physical appearance of the spirit they are channeling. Variance and abilities are entirely dependant upon the skill and experience of the spirit medium.

Most spirit mediums communicate with spirits all the time and don't need to be in a trance to give messages. This is commonly referred to as 'channeling', and it is a form of mediumship as well. The words channeling and mediumship can be interchanged, but typically when someone is channeling spirit, they are aware of the messsages they are receiving. They can then choose to keep the information to themselves or share it with others. A trance medium however is generally unaware of what they are saying. When giving messages they are in a trance state. Spirit takes over their body and comunicates directly through them.

Some psychics receive spirit messages while writing. This is called spirit writing or automatic writing using any writing tool such as a pen, pencil, or keyboard.
